A narrow fairway, an approach shot over a bunker, or a long putt cause us to focus more intensely almost automatically. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is a situation that is far more disconcerting: failing precisely when the shot seemed easy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A short putt that required very little force. An easy approach shot from the fairway. A seemingly simple tee shot. These are shots we\u2019ve made many times, and precisely because of that, we may approach them with less attention than is necessary.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because <strong>missing easy shots in golf<\/strong> doesn&#8217;t always mean you have a technical problem. Sometimes the exact opposite is true: we&#8217;re so confident that we can execute the shot that we stop preparing for it the way we do with the difficult ones. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s where the problem begins.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When it seems easy, we change the way we play<\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When faced with a difficult situation, we tend to act more cautiously.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We assess the distance, check the wind, choose our club, visualize the shot, and go through our routine.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, when the situation seems straightforward, it is common to speed up the entire process.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We thought, \u201cThat\u2019s it\u2014it\u2019s done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And almost without realizing it, we can change our routine.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That small change is important because <strong>concentration in golf<\/strong> shouldn&#8217;t depend solely on the apparent difficulty of the shot.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A one-meter putt still requires a good read. A short approach shot still requires a landing spot. And a wide fairway doesn&#8217;t mean we can hit the tee shot without properly setting up for the shot.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often, the mistake doesn&#8217;t show up during the swing.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It started a few seconds earlier.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overconfidence can also lead to mistakes<\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence is essential to playing golf well. The problem arises when confidence and relaxation turn into recklessness. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thinking that a shot is easy can cause us to pay less attention to elements that we would normally take into account.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>to align ourselves too quickly;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>failing to check the distance properly;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>choose the club almost automatically;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>not visualizing where we want the ball to bounce;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>swinging before you&#8217;re fully ready.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They&#8217;re small details, but they can explain some of the most frustrating <strong>mistakes in golf<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there&#8217;s an interesting paradox: the simpler we think a shot is, the less we can tolerate missing it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That could also affect the next one.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A missed easy shot can cost more than a difficult one<\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily on the card, but in my mind.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we miss a difficult shot, we usually come up with an explanation right away:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was very windy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe green was very well protected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, after failing at something we thought was easy, another reaction sets in:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow could I have missed that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That question can linger in our minds until the next shot and cause a single mistake to turn into two.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why an important part of the <strong>mental strategy in golf<\/strong> is understanding that the difficulty of a shot does not determine its outcome.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even a seemingly easy shot can go wrong.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And accepting that allows you to keep playing without turning a normal mistake into a bigger problem.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The short putt is the perfect example<\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably no shot better illustrates this situation than a short putt.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;re close to the hole. We don&#8217;t need much power. The distance seems under control.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything suggests that it should be simple.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it is precisely with short putts that several problems can arise: poor alignment, reading the line too quickly, or slowing down out of fear of overshooting.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the closer we are to the hole, the higher our expectation of making the putt tends to be.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That expectation could change the way the move is executed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solution isn&#8217;t to think of every short putt as difficult. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without adding unnecessary pressure, but also without skipping steps just to make it seem easy.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A wide street can also be a mental trap<\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something similar happens off the tee.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we see a narrow hole, we immediately think about positioning, trajectory, and the safe zone.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we&#8217;re standing in front of a wide street, we might feel that \u201cthere&#8217;s plenty of room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that can cause us to lose accuracy.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, some players execute a breakout better when they have a very specific goal within the safe zone<\/strong> helps you stay focused on your shot.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This ties directly into something we already mentioned when discussing <strong>the toughest decisions on a golf course<\/strong>: often, the outcome begins to take shape even before the swing.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Short shots shouldn&#8217;t be played on autopilot either<\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;re just a few meters from the green and we&#8217;re in a good position.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems like an ideal situation.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a short approach requires making quite a few decisions:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where should the ball land?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How long will it run?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is there anything left to do?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where is the safest place if I don&#8217;t perform perfectly?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is it a good idea to attack the flag directly?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thinking only about the fact that we are \u201cclose\u201d can cause us to overlook these variables.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why, instead of classifying a shot as easy or difficult, it&#8217;s more useful to ask feelings<\/h5>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the best ways to avoid these mistakes is to have a simple routine.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t have to be long or complicated.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its purpose is to help us prepare for each shot in a similar way, regardless of whether we feel very confident or not very confident.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>assess the situation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>determine the objective;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>choose the stick;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>visualize the shot;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to put on;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>execute.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
